A Tour of Scotland - and some fun with Grammy Pags

Hi Friends and Family - We just returned from a wonderful trip to Scotland . . . and we did have a wee dram of Scotch whisky in your honor!!

Below is a picture collage of a few sites and experiences we had on our Trafalgar Tour of Scotland, September 2015.  Seen here are:  the Castle of Edinburgh; street piper; Church of the Holyrood; wild flowers, street festival and art; student and horse parade; meat pie and veggies; shepherd and sheep dogs; castles; The Highlands, and the ancient Carr Bridge - the Bridge of Mourning.

Video of musical entertainment by Farmer MacGregor - Scotland 2015  Here is some Scottish entertainment by the MacGregor Family of the MacGregor Family Farm. The farm is between 300 - 400 years old and their kin, Rob Roy MacGregor, who was like "Robin Hood" in his day, met here with the MacGregor Clan to plan their next moves. (Please excuse the shaky video - I couldn't keep my toes from tappin!)

I always wanted to play
the bagpipes!!
A few of my favorite Scotch words:
Tatties = Potatoes
Creamy Mash = Mashed Potatoes
Neeps = Turnips
GOLF = Gentlemen Only Ladies Forbidden
Midgies = biting insects like mosquitoes
Toastie = toasted / grilled sandwich
Take Away = Carry Out

and phrases:
Like floggin’ a deid horse.
The lights are on, but nobody’s home.
Don’t get your knickers in a knot!
A nod is as guid as a wink tae a blind horse.
Castle near Hamilton, Scotland ~ home of my Great-Grandfather Findlay.
I'm wearing our Farquarson Clan tartan.

Enjoy!!

A fun NEW title from: GRAMMY PAGS STORIES!

A little like Dr. Seuss's "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish"
this book, "Grammy's Rockin' Color Rap-a-licious Rap ~ Teaching Kids Colors"
has a rockin' / rhymin' beat that kids will love!!
KINDLE and SOFT COVER VERSIONS ~ available:

What others are saying: "a charming and fun rhyming book about colors"
"readers will find themselves engaged in the pictures"
"be prepared for many giggles from your little ones"

Boom Shee-boom-boom! Boom Shee-boom-boom! And so begins a rollicking and
enjoyable preschool/early elementary rap on learning the concept of colors. The strong beat
of the rap will appeal to children and will motivate them to learn in an lighthearted manner.
The visuals echo the fun! The adorable digital illustrations use vivid bright colors with
white backgrounds to focus readers' attention.

As an elementary Speech Language Pathologist, I will use this book with my normal
neuro-developing children, those on the autism spectrum, those with intellectual disabilities,
and those with other learning disabilities. Research has shown that music-based learning
strengthens and builds connections with content areas. The use of rap motivates
otherwise uninterested students who have difficulties grasping concepts. It is a
catalyst for students to think, learn, and recall concepts.

Following the rap are fun-filled worksheets to strengthen the connections made.
An added benefit for sure!

Silly Grammy is at it again!
This time she’s teaching kids colors to
a "Rockin’ Color RAP-a-licious Rap."

Kids can clap and stomp their feet,
to a boom-shee-boom-boom, rockin’ beat!
Go Grammy, go Grammy, go Grammy, GO!!

From Author, Rhonda Paglia:  "Nikki has added great detail, thought, and personality into each illustration.  Her creativity, sense of humor, and her heart, come sparkling through her characters!  They might remind some of Dr. Seuss's darling book, "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish."  I am just over the moon delighted and I think kids are going to LOVE this book - just because of Nikki!!"

"Grammy's Rockin' Color Rap-a-licious Rap ~ Teaching Kids Colors" includes 6 enrichment and extended learning activity pages!

From the Author

This fun, funny little rhyme / rap book was inspired by Tyler, a little boy with autism. He was having a difficult time learning his colors, so I wrote this book for him, hoping the association of sound, pictures, rhythm, and words would help.  Working on "Grammy's Rockin' Rap-a-licious Rap ~ Teaching Kids Colors" with illustrator, Nicole Resele, was such a joy. A long time ago, Nicole ~ "Nikki" ~ was one of my sweet little 4th grade students.  Now, she's a teacher and recently earned her masters degree. I would never have imagined (when she was in my 4th grade class) that someday I would have the privledge of working with her on a project like this.  Nikki has added great detail, thought, and personality to each illustration. Her creativity, her sense of humor, and her heart come sparkling through and might remind some of Dr. Seuss's darling book, "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish."  I am just over the moon delighted with the end results, and I think kids are going to LOVE this book - just because of Nikki!!

Book #2 ~ "The Woozler" ~ What others are saying:

READERS' FAVORITE - 5-Star Review by Emily-Jane Hills Orford

Sofia Margaret is a charming little girl with a secret friend, Meeda. The two girls are like twins, only Meeda lives in Sofia Margaret's mirror. The two girls love to do the same things. They love to play and explore and even bake chocolate chip cookies.  The Woozler is a grumpy creature who lives under a tree in their backyard. Sofie and Meeda want to reach out to Woozler and try to be his friend.  Rhonda L. Paglia has written another delightful book in the Meeda and Me series for young readers. Children enter this world without prejudice. They don't judge and label as the adult world does. This book is about acceptance and friendship, something about which we all need a gentle reminder from time to time. Well done.

Format: Kindle Edition

I downloaded this book about two weeks after reading a profile about the author.
I started reading this at bedtime for my 8 and 5 year old the other night. My
daughter grabbed the tablet half way through reading this story as she felt I
wasn't reading it fast enough.  It's a charming story with fun characters that
children will find captivating and entertaining. There's a wonderful lesson
about sharing and caring that's weaved into the fabric of the story amidst the
shenanigans taking place.  Definitely a worthy addition to your loved ones library.

By Rhonda Patton on May 12, 2015
Format: Kindle Edition
My son is 5 and already he is wanting to hear the story over and
over. I would recommend this story for any child boy or girl.

We loved this book and wanted to read it over and over again.
The illustrations were so engaging and made us laugh!

"The Little Lambs
and the Very Special Mission"

~2015 "Angels in Charge"
Scholarship Recipient Announced ~

December 14, 2012: a date forever emblazoned in my mind and heart.

It has been two and a half years since the horrific massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School.  The loan gunman, Adam Lanza, had enough ammunition to kill 500 people. He entered Sandy Hook Elementary School with the intent to kill as many people as he could find. In less than 5 minutes, Lanza killed 6 educators and 20 innocent children, 6 and 7-year-old first graders.

When I heard the news, I couldn't believe my it.  My first thought was - "This can't be happening!  This doesn't happen in our schools!  This doesn't happen in America!"

I wept.  My heart hurt.  My soul mourned.  I prayed.  How could this happen?  How could this happen in OUR courtry?  What is going on? What has happened to the souls and morals and foundation of our people?

I prayed so hard! I prayed for those darling babies, for their families, for their teachers, and for their
community. How could this happen?  Schools [and churches and theaters and stores] are supposed to be safe places, not killing fields.  Our schools are places where our kids go to learn and to be with their friends and to have exciting educational experiences.  Kids don't get killed in schools!

I'm a retired elementary school teacher.  My first assignement was teaching first grade - I taught 6-year-olds!  Those babies were excited and eager to learn!  As their teacher, I helped them learn how to read.  I taught them math and how to write. We played together on the playground.  Those babies were my kids and they were were the SAME age as those children that were murdered at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

As the news of Sandy Hook crashed into my consciousness, I thought about my first students - my little first graders.  They trusted me. They depended on me to keep them safe during their school day. And I did that.  I kept them safe to the best of my ability.

I related to the Sandy Hook Elementary School teachers.  I know they loved their students.  I know they did their best to keep their kids safe.

I also know they practiced lockdown drills. Lockdown drills mean: lock your door [if you have a lock], turn off the lights, hide your students to the best of your ability, and maintain silence at all times until the "all clear" signal.  I did that with my students.  I know the hero teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary School did the same thing.

How the "Little Lambs and the Very Special Mission" came to be
During my prayers for the children and teachers of Sandy Hook, I was "given" a story.  What do you do when you are given something during your prayers? I didn't ask for it.  It was "given" to me.  I had two voices in my ears.  One voice said, "Don't get involved."  The other voice said, "I gave you this story, you are to tell it."  That is the voice I listened to.

The story and images I saw in my mind gave me comfort and hope.

I wrote the story and illustrated "The Little Lambs and the Very Special Mission" to the best of my ability, but I couldn't create all the illustrations.  I needed help and God sent me help in the form a 14-year-old angel/student named Taylor Galaska.  Taylor drew what I couldn't.  He drew the hands of God, the Angels in Charge, the Green Angel, and the Great Shepherd.  With Taylor's illustrations, "The Little Lambs and the Very Special Mission" came to life and took wings.

Honoring the fallen children and teachers

As a retired teacher, I wanted to do something to honor the fallen teachers.  I wanted Newtown to know that there are people in our country who care about their kids and their community.  I created the "Angels in Charge Scholarship" award for seniors graduating from Newtown High School who are planning a career in education.  Since the release of "The Little Lambs and the Very Special Mission" in April 2013, this little book has generated $5500.00 in scholarship funds.  Taylor and I are hoping the scholarship will grow so we can continue give back to this one community that has lost so much.  We are also hoping the little lambs' BE messages will touch people's hearts and help our world become a better, kinder place for everyone.

2015 "Angels in Charge Scholarship" Recipient Announced

About the 2015 scholarship recipient:
I am so pleased that to announce that Brooke H__________ was presented the 2015 "Angels in Charge Scholarship Award" on June 3, 2015 at the Newtown [CT] High School Awards Ceremony.

The Green Angel
I received this message from the Newtown High School College and Career Center about Brooke: "This year's recipient for the "Angels in Charge Scholarship" is Brooke H.  Brooke has plans of becoming a teacher, she has applied for every scholarship for which she has met the criteria, and she has overcome some major obstacles in her life. Brooke completed two-30 hour internships at 2 different elementary schools in our district, with glowing reports.  She is a hard working and focused young lady and is truly deserving of this scholarship."

I was delighted to present Brooke with a scholarship check of $500.00 from the sale of "The Little Lambs and the Very Special Mission."  I just wish it had been more!

I wrote Brooke a letter that accompanied the scholarship check.  The letter ended like this: "Thank you so much, Miss Brooke, for being a shining light in your school and community.  You have proven yourself to be a special angel who is going help make our world a better place!!"

NOTE:  The recipient is pictured in the Newtown Bee article on Newtown High School Awards Night and recipients.  She is seen receiving one of her many senior awards.  Congratulations, Miss Brooke . . . and God Bless the Brooke's in this world, who are the lights serving as role models and future leaders.  They will help make our world a better place for everyone.
