Story written by Rhonda Paglia ~ "a Grammy Pags Story"

Rhonda Paglia is a children's author, a retired elementary teacher, and a "not so retired" grandmother from Pennsylvania. "Grammy Pags," as she is called, is the author of 4 children's books.  "Duke n' Matt ~ Rescue Road Warriors" will be her 5th children's book.

"The Little Lambs and the Very Special Mission" was her first children's book to be released to the public. This story came to her during her prayers for the children, teachers, and familes after the tragedy at Sandy Hook.  This gentle, sweet story is dedicated to the children and teachers of Sandy Hook Elementary School and offers the hope that the world will become a better place.  All the profits from the sale of this book go to the "Angels in Charge" Scholarship Award for students graduating from Newtown High School who meet the requirements and are planning a career in education.

Other books by Rhonda Paglia:

"Doonsey's Beach Adventure, the Great Rescue"  and "Doonsey's Beach Adventure, the Great Rescue, Coloring and Activity Book."  Doonsey is a little ocean crab that loves to explore.  His quiet exploring day becomes a great rescue day in the fun little adventure about a beach crab with a big heart.

Her current release is, "Three Little Gnomes and a Boy Named Orion."  Three little gnomes discover that they have a big problem.  They look for the solution and make a new friend in the process. Ratna Kusuma Halim created the illustrations for this charming story.

All of Grammy Pags Stories are appropriate for kids 2+, reading level grades 2 - 3

The "Angels in Charge" Scholarship Winners - Part 2

The recipients have been named and the awards presented.

Two high school seniors from Newtown High School, Julia and Danielle, were chosen earlier in June as recipients for the "Angels in Charge" Scholarship Award.  Both girls received a $1250 scholarship that was generated from the sale of my children's story, The Little Lambs and the Very Special Mission. The girls were chosen by a panel of adults from Newtown High School. They met the academic requirements, were involved in school activities, and were very active in their community.  Both girls were influenced by kids and both plan to pursue careers in education.

Today, I'm going to tell you about Danielle.  Like Julia, Danielle just graduated from Newtown High School and is the other 2014 "Angel in Charge" scholarship award winner.

In her application essay, Danielle said, "as a child, I was always playing school with my pointer stick and my dolls as students."  As she grew older, she said, "the goal of teaching in a school setting evolved to teaching on the [softball] diamond."

Danielle is a softball player.  She helped out with softball clinics for young girls who "were always eager to learn" and other teenagers, like herself, who were "eager to teach."  One young, enthusiastic softball player was 6-year-old Grace McDonnell.

Danielle's said, "The latest and greatest trend at the time was unique and colorful feather extensions.  My turquoise feather stood out through my ponytail as I tossed and threw ground balls to the future softball stars. Grace particularly admired this accessory, and couldn't wait to take part in the fad.  Grace's smile never filled her face more than the day she too arrived at the field with an identical turquoise feather extension in her hair.  It stood out prominently among the golden wavy strands tied back in her ponytail.  Of course, she wouldn't let me miss it.  When I pointed it out and complimented Grace on her feather, she responded, "I wanted to be just like you."

In her essay, Danielle stated, "There is no greater feeling than that of reward.  I would imagine that this is what teachers really aspire to achieve. That is the feeling I long for when I think about living the dream I have always had about teaching.  This incredible feeling was never more present than every Tuesday, when Grace showed up for softball, and made her way into my group, ready to improve her skills.  Having a child like Grace who looked up to and showed such respect for me is the type of assurance that makes everything I'm doing seem like it is right.  It makes me feel that this really is what my future is supposed to entail, that teaching is something meant for me.  There is such great importance in recognizing a symbol like this.  We are all meant to do something with our lives, and we need to see past the social expectations and find what our passion and calling is.

Grace McDonnell
"Success is defined in one hundred different ways, relative to the person defining it; relative to their experience, their aspirations, and their dreams.  Through my experiences, I have learned that success should revolve around the betterment of the lives of others.  Your experiences define who you are, and who you will be.  My experience is through Grace McDonnell.  My aspiration is to teach, and my dream is to change children's lives, one classroom at a time."

"When tragedy struck my town on December 14, 2012, my aspirations for teaching had never been more solidified.  Grace McDonnell was my drive, and I knew I had to become a teacher in order to change other little boys' and girls' lives, and have them change mine, just like Grace had.  She may not have the opportunity to be the next Newtown softball star, but every night, when the sky gets dark, Grace is there. She is the star that shines the brightest, and that is the star that will continue to inspire me to change children's lives for the rest of my life."

In my letter to Danielle, I told her:  As a recipient of the “Angels in Charge” award, you are being recognized for your leadership at school and in your community, in addition to being an outstanding student.  To me, it means you have emulated the legacy of the Sandy Hook teachers: you are a role model, a hero, and already, an “Angel in Charge” teacher.  I am so proud of you and your accomplishments.  Danielle Shine - keep shining your star light as you go through life.  I know you have a special little angel named Grace McDonnell on your shoulder and together, you are going to help make our world a better place!!

Grace McDonnell, age 7, was one of the 20 children who parished in the attack on Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012.  She was born on November 4, 2005, the beloved daughter of Christopher and Lynn McDonnell of Sandy Hook.  Grace died tragically on December 14, 2014 at Sandy Hook Elementary School.  She was a beautiful, artistic soul and was truly a gift from God.  She represented all that is good in this world.  Grace was passionate about painting and she loved the beach.  Her dream was to become a painter and to live on Martha's Vineyard.

The "Angels in Charge" Scholarship Winners - Part 1

The"Angels in Charge" Scholarship
recipients have been named and the awards presented.

They met the academic requirements, were involved in school activities, and have been very active in their community.  Both girls were influenced by kids and both plan to pursue careers in education.

Today, I'm going to tell you about Julia, one of this year's "Angel in Charge" award winners.

In addition to her academics and activities at school, Julia is a religious education teacher in Newtown. She teaches first graders.  After the tragedy at Sandy Hook, she said, "my students, who survived the events at Sandy Hook, were severely traumatized. Week after week, I looked into many sad eyes and listened to their detailed stories of exactly what happened and how much they missed the teachers and friends they had lost. Week after week, I had to help calm the children when they ducked for cover when the heater made loud, terrifying sounds.  Week after week, I had to dig deep and find the strength to be the the rock that these children desperately needed after their world had been turned upside down.

"Ready or not, I had to rise to the occasion and be the adult, no matter how painful.  I needed to be there even if all I could do was listen and hold them tightly; many classes, this was all that I was able to do for my first graders.  It was essential for me to provide stability and consistency. Together we would learn resiliency.

"After one of my little girls divulged with tearful eyes our first class back [after the tragedy] that I was 'the only teacher she had left now,' I realized that we had to put curriculum aside and focus on what the kids needed most - love and security."

In her essay, Julia goes on to say that she was determined to help be a source of comfort and love for her students.  Cozy teddy bears were brought in for the kids, special "sweet dreams" pillow cases were made for them, and therapy dogs visited her class to help provide comfort.  She said that it took months before she saw smiles on the faces of the kids again, but they made remarkable progress.  She ended her essay by saying: "Every single one of these students holds a special place in my heart. I was determinded to make a lasting impression on their lives and help them begin to heal like the rest of our town.  Together we faced the future with courage, faith, and most importanly, love."

To me, Julia is already an "Angel in Charge."  Through her work, action, compassion, and example, she is helping to make the world a better place. Thank you, Julia, and best of luck in the future.  You are going to make a wonderful teacher!

Thanks also to everyone who purchased my book and / or made donations to help make the "Angels in Charge" scholarship happen.

Much love, Rhonda Paglia "Grammy Pags"

Tomorrow I will tell you about the other "Angels in Charge" Scholarship recipient, Danielle.

Have you saved someone's life and didn't even know it?

I had an experience today - I need to share.

I was at an event today.  Weather perfect.  Sun shining.  People happy and having fun.  I was a vendor.  I was having fun introducing people to my "Grammy Pags Stories."

A young woman came to my tent. My thoughts were: Does she have any young kids?  Do you think she might be interested in my books?

The woman looked familiar to me.  I said, "Hi, thanks for stopping at my booth."  Then I said, "You look really  familiar to me."  She said, "You look familiar too."  I introduced myself and said, "I'm Rhonda Paglia and I'm a children's author."  She asked, "Mrs. Paglia?"  I said,  "Yes."  She asked, "Did you teach school?"  I said, "Yes," and told her where and when.  She said, "Mrs. Paglia, you were my teacher."  Then she said, "You saved my life!"  I couldn't catch my breath.  Tears, that I couldn't control, started to roll down my cheeks.  "What are you talking about?" I asked.  Then she shared her story.

She was my student - almost 30 years ago.  I couldn't remember her name until she told me, but I sure remembered the child - and I always wondered what happened to her.

I remember her as a sweet, shy, little girl in my class.  I remember that she was smart. But I also remember that she came to school unkempt, dirty, sad, and scared.  She was 8 or 9 years old at the time.  As her teacher, I remember worrying about her.  I remember that my heart reached out and ached for her.

Today she told me, "Mrs. Paglia, you were the only one who listened to me."

I remember this child telling me about her life at home.  I remember that she told me about the abuse she was going through - emotional, physical, psychological, and sexual. I could see it in her face and in her demeaner. I went to the school nurse and the principal.  "Where's the proof?" they asked.   But I believed this child.

One day she showed me the bruises on her body.  I remember going straight to the school nurse and the principal.  I remember standing in the nurse's office. I was nauseated - sick to my stomach.  My heart hurt. Then I made the call to CYS - Children and Youth Services.   I also remember that she left school that day, and I never saw her again.  I always wondered what happened to her and if she was okay.

Today, that girl is now a grown woman, a mother, and a grandmother.  She showed up at my booth and said,  "You saved my life."  She said, "If you hadn't called CYS, I don't know what would have happened to me."  Can you imagine the burden on a child of 8 or 9 wondering IF they were going to survive?

She said, "I'm here, I survived, and I'm okay."  I had no words.  Tears continued to roll down my cheeks.  I gave her the biggest hug I could give her.  Today she stood before me as an adult, but I hugged that little girl I never thought I would ever see again.

She shared the sequence of events that happened after she went home the day I called CYS. And she brought me up to date - foster care, living with grandparents.  I asked about her dad, the abuser.  "He's dead," she said, "but I've forgiven him.  I'm not going to be a victim anymore."  Though pregnant as a sophomore in high school, she kept the child, graduated from high school, earned an associate degree, and now, as an adult, has been accepted into college as a non-traditional student.  She's looking forward - not back - to the future - not to the past.  And her goal?  "I want to help kids who have been abused."

I can't tell you how humbled I was to be in this young woman's presence today.  To me, she's more than a survivor - she's a role model and a hero!

And for me - I'm still trying to process the conversation and the rollercoaster of emotions I felt today.  What would you have done?  All I did was listen to a little child with my heart, then make a phone call.  "You saved my life," she said.

THE BACK STORY BEHIND DOONSEY:  I loved writing "Doonsey's Beach Adventure, the Great Rescue!"  I was inspired by a family trip to Kure Beach, NC.  In a cute beach shop, I found a little toy windup crab that walked side ways.  He was adorable!  As soon as I gave him to my granddaughter, Sofie, she immediately named him Doonsey.  Well Doonsey accompanied us everywhere we went on our Kure Beach vacation, and he became the inspiration for "Doonsey's Beach Adventure, the Great Rescue."

I have five grandchildren.  They love to read and listen to stories and they get a big kick out of their "Grammy's" stories.  My grandchildren enjoy learning and working on projects, so I created "Doonsey's Beach Adventure, the Great Rescue Coloring / Activity book for them.  I am sharing it with the public and hope other kids will like it too.  Both book are great if you are traveling.  The activities and charming characters will keep kids busy and engaged. Have fun!!

Books, Books, Books - Grammy's Favorite Kids' Books this week

[L-R] Librarian Janice Langdon,
the REAL Orion, from "Three
Little Gnomes and a Boy
Named Orion," and children's
author, Rhonda Paglia

Hey Grammy - What are you reading?

Hi Everyone!  I've been lost for awhile -  lost inside some really neat chidren's stories.  One of my very favorite things, that I absolutely LOVE, is children's books!  I love the pictures, the stories, the rhythm of the words, and especially love to see what's inside the author's imagination!  I think that's my favorite part!!

I also have a special place in my heart for independent authors - the ones who self-publishing their books.  I applaud their efforts and want to share some of my favorites this week that I think you should check out.

Lorenzo the Bear: Encounter at Jellyfish Cove
by Carmela Dutra
This is a sweet little book about the brave Lorenzo Bear who practices his sword fighting skills everyday [just incase he ever meets up with a pirate]. Well, Lorenzo does just that in the Encounter at Jellyfish Cove.  He meets up with first mate, the peg-legged octopus, Octavius, and the nasty pirate baboon, Lord Boris.  Thankfully, Lorenzo's practice pays off! Carmela Dutra is also the artist for this charming little read aloud story.

Dani and the Haunted House -a Dani P. Mystery
by Kristen Lamb.
I loved the fiesty little, 7-year-old female detective, Dani Spinelli, and her sidekick, Chloe.  Together they figure out what's causing all the mysterious events that have been happening at the amusement park's haunted house ride. I used to love the Nancy Drew mysteries as a kid.  Author, Kristen Lamb is providing mystery chapter books for younger readers with short, easy to read chapters that will keep the kids flipping the pages.

Finally - this is VERY special:
The Sugary Sherburts and the Stone Witch
by Heather Ellis, illustrated by James Ellis
I want to tell you that I had such fun reading this delightful book about the Sugary Sherburts who live in the town of Thornton - where the houses are made of chocolate!  There is an evil witch in this story who wants to destroy the town and ruin Christmas for everyone.  She can turn things and people to stone with her evil powers. Twins, Kit and Kat Sugary-Sherburt, have solved mysteries before, so they set out to try figure out what is happening to their town and stop the nasty witch before they have to get home for dinner.

The BEST part of this book is, not only the tale that is woven and the hint of a British accent that I could detect in the text, but the fact that the author, Heather Ellis, from England, is only 11 years old!  I read it through once, and when I get a little more time, I will read it again, just to enjoy the story and the language of this young, gifted author.  Her Dad, James Ellis, was the illustrator, and his drawings are a lot of fun!  I highly recommend this book for kids who want to read a great story by a kid!  Also, kudos to Heather's parents for supporting her and her book.  I think we will be reading more of Heather's stories in the future!  Bravo, Miss Heather!!

Love to you all,
